If you’re taking care of your elderly parents or grandparents, their doctor may have told you to help them with basic physical workouts to help keep them healthy and revitalized. Unfortunately, this prospect isn’t as easy as it looks. The same exercises that work for younger adults don’t necessarily work as well for seniors, as the intensity of the workouts has to be toned down, and some of the exercises might have to be avoided entirely.

 

Before knowing what works, it’s important to have a clear idea of what doesn’t work. For example, you should never encourage seniors – especially those with heart problems or suffering from Parkinson’s Disease – to engage in any excessively intense cardio or strength building exercises. While cardio is great if it’s mild or moderate, and some bodybuilding exercises can work with smaller weights (or even just using body weight), they can put a lot of pressure on the body if the effort is too intense.

 

Mild stretching and cardio, on the other hand, are great for overall physical fitness. Regular, brisk walks and even jogging can be a good idea for seniors who have a little more energy, and even for those who need to build up their heart strength.  The assisted living Tyler residents have programs that offer exercise classes that help them to stay active, which is great.

 

Most doctors will also recommend cycling and gym training as a good option, as long as the intensity of the exercises are kept at a moderate level. In many cases you’ll find exercising in nature and taking in more fresh air to be an incredible asset compared to indoor exercises.
