Things You May Not Know About the Fourth of July

How some used to celebrate the 4th of JulyThe Fourth of July is a much-anticipated holiday and one of the most popular and largest in the US, with Americans being some of the greatest patriots. 242 years ago, the country declared its independence from the Great Britain. Therefore, for 242 years, on the Fourth of July, all Americans go out on the street and celebrate that moment with parades, fireworks, picnics, family gatherings, barbecue sessions and hamburgers, lots of beer and apple pie.

But no matter how patriotic they would be, not everyone knows everything about a national holiday. Here is some lesser-known information.

  • The first Independence Day was celebrated in 1777, in Philadelphia. Soldiers did a parade and 13 gun shots were fired in honor of the then 13 states. However, Independence Day became an official celebration only in 1870.
  • Thomas Jefferson, who wrote the Declaration of Independence, was very young at that time (only 33 years old).
  • In 1776, when the country declared itself independent, there were only 2.5 million Americans living here; now, after 242 years, they are over 310 million.
  • On July 4, all American patriots decorate their houses with national flags. China manufactures most of them. Pretty ironic, right?
  • Three US presidents (Adams, Jefferson and Monroe) died on July 4. Talking about patriotism...

Businesses in the community, like http://www.erseniorliving.com/wesley-court-retirement-community-abilene-texas.aspx have seniors who have lived through some of the toughest times in American history and have upheld the declaration of Independence, and wish you a safe and happy 4th of July.
