Tips for Maintaining Good Posture as You Age

Doing What You Can To Retain Good Posture As You Age

Proper posture, the correct position while standing on your feet or sitting, is essential not only for avoiding back and shoulder pain or issues related to range of motion, but for the health of the lungs, for proper circulation in the entire body, especially in the limbs as well as for preventing spinal misalignment. The correct position while sitting or standing is ideally learned in childhood, but it can be achieved at any age – if your sitting or standing posture is not the straightest right now, in the beginning, you will need to pay attention to correcting your position constantly, but soon, after a couple of weeks, the correct posture will become a habit that you will adopt unconsciously. Here are some ways to get used to adopting the right position:

  • Use the right chair that allows you to sit straight – a properly sized, ergonomic chair can promote healthy posture and shorten the period you need for getting used to sitting right;
  • Strengthen your spine – as we age, the muscles in our back become weaker. You can prevent this from happening easily, with back exercises, such as shoulder rolls, forward leans and planks;
  • Draw your shoulders back and pull out your chest while walking or standing.
