Understanding the Different Terminology of Assisted Living

  • Assisted living facility – a housing option designed for seniors who can no longer live independently and need help with daily activities, such as taking their medication, bathing, cooking and getting dressed;
  • Board and care homes, also called residential care homes– the difference between these facilities and assisted living homes is that board and care homes are more like regular family homes or houses equipped to meet the special requirements of the residents;
  • Home health care – medical care services provided by professionals at the individual’s home;
  • Medicaid – public assistance offered by US states to people who are in need of medical care, but are unable to pay for it. Applicants need to meet several criteria, especially criteria related to income;
  • Nursing home – a facility that provides 24-hour care, housing and board for people who suffer from chronic illnesses or for people in the process of recovering from an illness.
