There are no recipes when it comes to family relationships, but if you have a functional family and a loved one is in senior living, you probably feel like making your visits count.
Such a visit is never easy, but there are ways to turn them into positive experiences and make them as pleasant as possible for everyone.
The thumb rule is to be patient. The first visits after your parent made the transition and left behind a home they lived in for decades may be more difficult and awkward, but give them time to adjust, encourage them and their mood and overall attitude will improve. Get them involved with the activities there and help them to make new friends. Places like Meadow Lake Senior Living offer great amenities and daily activities.
Make sure you always plan your visits (in senior living communities there are good times and not-so-good times to drop in, because of treatment sessions and other activities) and do your best to transform them into a routine, because seniors tend to like predictability.
While visiting, talk about good memories and happy times, but do not allow nostalgia to take in completely, because this is not very healthy; try to create new memories too, by doing things together during your visit (sharing meals, taking walks, photos, crafting together etc.)
Don`t overwhelm or over stimulate your loved one. Just keep your interactions simple and natural.
