Great Dance Moves for Seniors

Dancing Is Great To Incorporate In Senior Living CommunitiesDance is an excellent form of physical activity at any age – young people can choose faster-paced music, more acrobatic movements for a spectacular performance, but seniors can also enjoy moving in tune with the music, even if their moves are usually softer, more calculated. Dance can be used as part of an efficient, low-impact exercise regimen that keeps muscles in shape, maintains the flexibility of the joints and does all these in an unnoticed, enjoyable, fun way. Here are some of the moves that experienced as well as professional senior dancers can equally enjoy:

  • Low impact moves sitting on a chair – you don’t need to be standing and moving on your feet to be dancing. Many dance studios today provide special, seated dance classes for seniors and there are lots of great training videos of the kind available online as well;
  • Salsa – the social dance originating for Cuba can be spiced up with acrobatics and made into a form of artistic expression, but the basic steps are quite easy and even in its mildest form, salsa works the muscles of the waist, the hips and the thighs, while also improving balance and coordination;
  • Ballroom dance – whether it is slower rhythms that you can do best or you have some special, swift moves to show, ballroom dance is also great fun and a great opportunity to socialize.  It's a great way to keep the residents at The Craig Senior Living center active and happy, it also keeps them socializing with others too!
