The Responsibilities for Caring for Senior Relatives At Home

Senior Living With DaughterBeing the caregiver responsible for your elderly relative living with you is a very complex duty that requires commitment, organization and lots of empathy. Here are some of the most important duties involved:

  • Assisting the elderly person with tasks related to personal care – bathing, grooming, getting dressed, eating can all become very difficult for elderly people, especially for those suffering from mobility issues;
  • Preparing food – the process of food preparation involves leaving the home to shop for groceries as well as tasks that lots of fine movements, such as peeling and chopping, that might prove to be difficult for elderly people. As a primary caregiver, you will be responsible for handling these tasks in a manner that is pleasing for your elderly loved one;
  • Administering medication – as cognitive functions, such as memory also decline with age, many elderly people find it increasingly difficult to remember when and how to take their medicines, so the caregiver needs to be overseeing that process, too;
  • Personal supervision - picking the clothes to wear, accompanying your aged loved one for walks to prevent them from losing their way, supervising them as they are doing things around the house in a gentle and understanding manner will also be among your tasks as a caregiver.  It's good to note there are caring caregivers at senior living Abilene centers who can offer help in time of need as well.
