Tips for Developing a Stretching Routine That Works For You

Stretching Routines Nursing Homes TipsStretching is great for keeping your muscles well toned and relieving stress. However, if you do not do it the right way, you will be left with a painful muscle cramp. So, here are a few helpful tips to help you develop an effective stretching routine.

  1. Start with a Good Warm-up

Before you start any kind of exercising, warm up properly. This means moving your neck, arms, legs and waist gently, to get the blood flowing well through all the muscle groups. Depending on how fit you are, your warm-up routine should last between 5 and 10 minutes.  This is a very important step for everyone, including the residents at nursing homes in Amarillo TX that are participating in exercise programs in house.

  1. You Want Tension, Not Pain

There is a saying: no pain, no gain. But do not take it literally. You should stretch your arms and legs until you feel that your muscles are tensioned. However, if you feel pain, you should stop. Many people mistake pain from an overly exerted muscle for signs that their stretching works. It does not – pain means you are hurting your muscles.

  1. Keep a Correct Posture at All Times

A bad posture will cause you a lot of problems during stretching. From mild muscle cramps to a painful sprain, you can hurt yourself if you are not standing or sitting correctly as you stretch. Ideally, you should join a gym and work with a trainer, at least until you learn the basics about exercising safely.
