What Are the Different Types of Memories?

Explanation of The Differenty Types Of The Memory

Memory takes lots of different forms – the brain selects and categorizes the information that we gather and the experiences that we go through and it stores our memories in different places. The information that we gather from the world around us first enters a sensory register, from which it is distributed to the two major types of memory: short-term and long-term memory.  The centers that offer senior living near me work hard in helping their residents improve their memory skills.  The first type stores information such as an activity scheduled for later during the day or a phone number that you need to use for a short while before your brain disposes of it or transfers it to the long-term storage space.  The other major type is long-term memory, the storage space where information is stored for very long periods, in the case of some types of information for a lifetime. Long-term memory has several different sub-sections that store different types of information:

  • Explicit memory – the information from this section is retrieved by using conscious thought;
  • Implicit memory – the largest part of long-term memory, this is the section that allows you to remember routines without actually thinking about them;
  • Autobiographical memory – this is the section that stores the memories of the events, emotions and impressions that we have experienced since we were born.
