The Best Pets for Senior Citizens

Elderly Couple Enjoying Their Senior Years With Their Pet

While household pets give their owners lots of joy and we hear about cases when a pet changed the life of the owner for the better, not all pets are suitable for elderly people, especially for people who have difficulties moving around or suffer from physical conditions that limit their choice and can even accompany you to the physical rehabilitation centers in Amarillo and other places. Here are a few species of companion animals that can make even bedridden people happy:

  • Small dogs – they don’t need so much physical activity as large breeds, but they give their owners just as much affection and joy;
  • Cats – they are known to be helpful, affectionate and very intelligent creatures who are independent as well. As they don’t need to be taken out for walks, they are perfect companions for seniors;
  • Birds – zebra finches, canaries and other small, colourful birds are also great pets for elderly people, especially for those who don’t mind a little noise in the house. These tiny creatures are surprisingly intelligent, too;
  • Guinea pigs and hamsters – these small, furry creatures are cute, affectionate and they don’t require too much maintenance, so they are just great for aging people who don’t want to be alone, but cannot walk long distances or do difficult cleaning work.
