Promoting volunteering activities among seniors is and should remain a priority, representing a basic dimension of civic engagement, as well as a factor of social cohesion and of raising the quality of life in all generations.
Volunteer opportunities for seniors vary greatly; at a micro level, poor education, health and very old age (over 75) are factors that become strong obstacles for people to take action. On the other hand, the experience as a volunteer before retirement increases the chances that a person will continue this activity as they age, improving their social experience and the sense of being useful.
Retirement is now a much more active period than it used to be in the past and for many seniors it represents a time when they finally have time to devote to interests and causes they believe in. Therefore, there are various volunteer opportunities for them:
- Becoming involved in restoring areas hit by disasters
- Performing activities related to animal care and environmental protection
- Helping other seniors through nutrition programs across the country and the all important physical rehabilitation centers in Tyler TX
- Becoming involved in a medical care system that offers support for wounded or homeless veterans
- Going on volunteer trips around the world, organized by trusted organization, to contribute to conserving the environment, teaching and caring for children etc.
