Seniors Staying Active

Practicing a sport is a great activity at any age, including at senior age, when the body undergoes many changes and is more vulnerable. Most specialists agree that the deterioration of the body caused by aging is more accelerated in the case of sedentary people. Exercising must be correctly dosed and moderate in duration and intensity. The purpose is to maintain a good shape, improve blood circulation and get a good muscular tonus.

The choice of the exercises must be related to the sports a person has practiced throughout their lives, the level of physical activity they are accustomed to, their health status and the recommendations of the specialist doctor, especially if the person has certain medical conditions.

Here are some types of exercise and physical activities that the seniors can adapt and combine to meet their needs:

  • Walking is a great form of exercising that does not require special equipment. It does not involve high physical effort either, nor has medical restrictions; it can be combined with shopping or taking the grandchildren to/ from the kindergarten.  You can also utilize the respite care Odessa offers when taking care of loved ones on a full time basis, to allow you time to get out and walk.
  • Aqua gym is increasingly popular among seniors and also very healthy and safe, considering that in the water the pressure on the joints is not as big as in normal conditions.
  • Yoga and Pilates adapt easily to age-specific needs and also can be individualized for each person; the emphasis on developing flexibility, breathing, correcting body posture, developing balance and strengthening muscles make them efficient in fighting against the aging effects.
