Earth Day is the title given to a couple of annual events that raise awareness on environmental issues. Both of these observances were created in 1970.
Earth Day is celebrated in the United States on the 22nd of April. However, there is another one that is celebrated a month earlier at international level, originating in the vernal equinox of 1970.
Apparently, the first Earth Day celebration took place on March 21st 1970. It was invented by John McConnell, a newspaper publisher who came with the proposal of a worldwide holiday named Earth Day at a UNESCO conference on environmental topics, in 1969.
He chose the vernal equinox day, which is also the autumnal equinox in the southern hemisphere, because this day marks the idea of renewal, of change. This was meant to suggest that people should leave aside their differences and unite their efforts to help preserve natural resources.
In the United States, the date of April 22nd was eventually chosen due to the success of an environmental event held by the Environmental Teach-In, organized by the environmental activist by the name of Sen. Gaylord Nelson.
No matter when people choose to celebrate Earth Day, its message remains the same, inspiring people to protect the environment. The local assisted living Tyler centers always have opportunities to join in the celebration by helping to plant trees.
