Types of Relaxation Techniques for Senior Citizens

Reading Is A Form Of Relaxing

Stress affects all of us, seniors included, but relaxation techniques are also universally efficient, regardless of age. There are very many relaxation techniques available these days – some are physically more demanding, but here are some that are gentle and easy and therefore perfectly suitable for seniors of any age:

  • Controlled breathing – one of the biggest problems of modern life is that we have forgotten how to breathe properly. When we are stressed, we tend to take only short, shallow breaths, which affects the level of oxygenation in our body in a negative way. This exercise involves channelling your thoughts towards a positive image, such as a calm beach and taking long, deep breaths for a few minutes. The positive effect will be instant;
  • Tensing and relaxing muscles – all you need to do is to lay down comfortably on your bed, then tense the muscles in your body for a few seconds, focusing on one muscle at a time, then relaxing the tensed muscle to move on to the next one;
  • Massage – this will obviously require you to get a masseur, but good masseurs are not difficult to find and getting a good massage is a really pleasant and affordable way to relax your mind and your body.  For those taking care of other seniors, respite care Abilene centers offer is something to consider to allow you to have some regrouping and down time for yourself.
