Mindfulness Exercises For Seniors

Mindfulness Exercises For SeniorsThere is much talk about mindfulness lately. It is a state we cultivate, embody and experience and, at the same time, a way of being, an entrance gate to ourselves and to the world. Mindfulness means consciousness, and mindful exercises are great for any age, even for seniors at Odessa assisted living communities, due to their benefits in terms of perception, self-perception, self-knowledge and more.

Here are a few exercises suitable to be practiced by seniors regularly.

  • Full sensory activity

Wherever you are, stop somewhere you feel safe and look around. Become aware of everything that your senses transmit and what you perceive. How are you feeling? Do you feel overstimulated? Are you nervous?

  • Self-centration

Try to focus on your way of expressing yourself and determine how often you use the word "I" in a sentence. This observation makes you be aware of the degree of self-centering we all have – and which is not necessarely bad, by the way. Actually, mindfullness is not about subjecting yourself to judgments and popular beliefs; it is about becoming more aware of yourself.

  • Exercise to challenge your own beliefs

Choose a concept you believe in and then pretend for yourself that you actually believe the opposite. Write down what you feel and what thoughts go through your mind.

The purpose of these exercises is ultimately to understand yourself better and to become more familiar with your reactions. Many people have a hard time being mindfull and they realize this only once they start these exercises. However, the more you practice it, the more in control you will feel, even in stressfull situations.
