Staying connected with family and friends becomes increasingly important with age – there are numerous studies available that prove how beneficial social interaction is for our well-being and health at any age, gaining special importance in senior years. Unfortunately, the opportunities for socializing decline with age – adult children move away and establish their own home and family and old friends may have passed away -, aggravating isolation and loneliness, but even so, it is very important to pursue social interaction actively. Here are a few tips how:
- Contact others – initiating contact might seem a hard thing to do, but don’t forget, your peers suffer from isolation, too, so they will probably respond positively to your phone call or to your invitation;
- Find a support group – there are many groups that have formed specifically to provide opportunities for communication and socializing, make visits to the nursing homes in Abilene TX and be there for others;
- Learn to use the internet and social media – many seniors say that learning to use the computer and the internet has opened a new, exciting world for them and so has social media, an excellent tool for finding old friends as well as for making new ones;
- Get a pet – it doesn’t have to be a large dog who needs to take long walks daily. A cat, a small dog, a guinea pig or a hamster make excellent animal friends, too.
