Communication Tips For Seniors

Senior Living Center Senior TipsCommunication is extremely important regardless of age or context, giving everyone the opportunity to develop, to be informed, thus more confident and relaxed. However, this aspect is of vital importance for seniors, as they are in the period when communication and social interaction are variables that may drastically influence the quality of their life.

Unlike children, in the case of whom communication is more behavioral, seniors communicate mostly verbally (unlike they have a condition that affects their speaking capability). They tend to verbalize and emotionalize most aspects of their daily life. Their communication is sometimes also influenced by cognitive impairment caused by age or medical conditions, and thus the language may become poorer, while memory lapses, hearing problems or difficulties in maintaining the focus of the conversation may also occur. Other communication barriers may appear because many seniors tend to exaggerate, overact, be suspicious, rigid and oriented towards negative cognitive distortions. Some of them may even have behavioral problems, because these things do not really disappear with age.

It is very important for seniors at places like Meadow Lake Senior Living and other senior communities to be encouraged to be active, to describe their intentions and feelings, to provide information and not be limited to short statements or denials. Empowering seniors to make the effort to express themselves and make decisions is also very important and can greatly improve communication skills.
