Communication Tips For Adult Children And Parents

Daughter Speding Time With Aging Parents Senior Living LoveIn our modern times, with all the technological advancements, communication never seemed easier. And it actually is. Adult children can communicate with their parents over the phone, text messages, or on the Internet. However, these means of communication could not replace face-to-face interactions.

According to psychological studies, technology-enhanced communication can be both a blessing, and a curse, especially for parents, who have a tendency to worry a lot when their adult children complain about their mundane problems. Thus, parents can have mixed feelings about interacting with their children, and the quality of the communication can highly influence their mood.

The healthiest way for parents to communicate with their adult children is by using three means, namely phone calls, texting and meeting them in person, on a daily basis, if that is possible. If not, in case the interaction was rather negative, it is very important to try and fix things by using humor, or sharing a positive experience. This can help both parents and adult children relax and regain their trust and joy.

Both sides should try and use empathy and patience to communicate with each other. It is very important to understand the true intentions behind the other person’s words, and control our impulses and tendency to overreact.  Many of the senior communities including Meadow Lake Senior Living encourage this type of communication between family members.
