Popular Board Games In Senior Living Communities

Spelling Board Game

Board games are suitable for all ages, and seniors in living communities enjoy playing them together. At a time when there was no Internet, these games were even more popular than today. For seniors, they still are, considering that people of older age are still not very familiar with the new technologies.

Social games favor direct socialization among the participants. They meet the competitive requirements of an exciting game that can be played for a long time, stimulate the spirit of observation, imagination, eye-hand coordination and skill. They also develop strategic skills or test general knowledge (trivia games). Logical games train the mind.

The inherent message of social games is always the same: "Never give up!"

Recent studies reveal that seniors who regularly play board games have a lower risk of dementia, due to the fact that they enhance memory formation and exercise cognitive skills.  Board games involve focused thinking and problem solving, without being stressful.

Seniors at nursing homes prefer classic board games, even those visiting and having the respite care Tyler centers offer.

Chess

This is known as the sport of the mind. It is very complex, exercising both sides of the brain, requiring you to think ahead and be offensive and defensive in the same time.

Checkers

This game has been around for thousands of years, it is easy to play and provide the same mental benefits as the chess.

Scrabble

This is another mind game, which combines critical thinking and vocabulary.
