Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican holiday that celebrates the surprising and legendary triumph of the Mexican Army over the French on May, the Fifth, 1862 around the town of Puebla. The celebration today is observed not only in Mexico, but also by Mexican communities all over the world, in places of work and places like senior living Abilene centers and most notably in the US.
Cinco de Mayo is celebrated in many different ways, many of them involving parades featuring people dressed up as Mexican and French soldiers and spectacular reenactments of the original battle. The parades are accompanied by fairs with all sorts of entertainment and vendors selling Mexican food and typical souvenirs. In the US and in Canada, many people celebrate the day in the circle of friends and family, in the comfort of their homes. The homes are usually decorated in the colors of the Mexican flag, barbecues and traditional Mexican food, such as tortillas, enchiladas and tacos, is served and traditional Mexican music is played.
It is important to note that Cinco de Mayo is an optional holiday in Mexico, meaning that it is not an official day off work, so whether or not banks and other companies are open on the day is up to the companies and the states in which they are located in Mexico.
